Due to the poor weather in March, the annual PeaceJam UK conference was cancelled, and a Slam (one day conference) was organised in lieu of this on Saturday 21 April, in partnership with the University of Winchester. The event was attended by one hundred young people from secondary schools and youth groups across the UK, as well as twenty University students.
Prior to the Slam, students sent in questions that they would have asked Nobel Peace Laureate Tawakkol Karman, had the conference taken place as scheduled. The address that Nobel Peace Laureate Tawakkol Karman would have delivered had been recorded prior to the event as well as her answers to the questions sent it by students, and this was screened at the Slam. Following this, a panel discussion took place so that the audience had the opportunity to ask further questions about the situation in Yemen. The panel comprised of a Yemeni Refugee, a Yemeni research fellow from the London School of Economics and representatives from Reprieve and CARE International.
Students participated in all the usual conference activities, and had the unique opportunity to present their social change projects to the co-founder of the Burns Price Foundation- Peter Price, former Bishop of Bath and Wells and is himself a man of peace, as part of PeaceJam’s global call to action- the One Billion Acts of Peace campaign.
